Representation

A group that I may want to represent in my film opening would be teenagers in everyday life. I chose this group because the media gives them a poor connotation. They are typically represented in the media to be moody, immature, trouble making young adults who are reckless and have a negative perspective on life. Because of this many adults may believe that all younger people have bad intentions, when in reality there is a large amount who don't and would like to make a difference in the world like Emma Gonzalez.
I believe to an extent these stereotypes and representations are fair. Yes, there are many teenagers in the world who are moody and rebellious, but on the contrary there are even more trying to positively impact society. These representative characteristics gives uneducated adults a faulty idea of how teenagers behave in everyday life and just encourage poor judgement. But hopefully through my film opening, I can correct these false beliefs.
The characteristics I wish to challenge would be those that portray teenagers to be lazy and unaware of the world around them. Instead I would like to highlight how nowadays teenagers are taking stand for what they believe in to better living for themselves and others. Even though they are not yet adults, that does not mean they aren't mature enough to form their own opinions. But characteristics I would retain would be how teenagers are moody and indecisive because that is true in most cases since they haven't experienced much in life to completely understand what is in their best interest.

Romantic Comedy

Genre: Romantic Comedy
Content: A light-hearted film with little to no effects. These films typically showcase character development through the effects of a relationship. Usually, there is the main conflict that creates a strain on the newfound relationship, but later becomes resolved to leave a happy ending in the movie.
Production Techniques: Two shots are most commonly used to display the relationship between the two characters. Montages are used to highlight the relationship development between the characters during or post-break-up. Medium shots are also used to express the body language between two characters. This allows the audience to understand the nature of the relationship. As for Mise-en-scene, lighting and set design will be kept very natural to portray a sense of realism. Sometimes high-key lighting is used to portray a more happy scene to display the excitement of a new relationship. Colors that may be used with Mise-en-scene could be red because it represents passion and love which could correlate to the passion and love the characters may have for each other. Editing is kept very natural as well, to emphasize on the realistic style but crosscutting may be used to show two segments within the story happening at the same time.
Film Sample #1: 50 First Dates. This movie portrays the romantic element through the new budding love between the two main characters. Then shows the comedic side through the woman having a short term memory loss so the man in love with her has to convince her every day to fall in love with him and some days it goes horribly wrong but in a comedic way. This movie utilizes an abundance of two shots and medium shots and is used continuously throughout the film to display the development of their relationship.
Film Sample #2: Clueless. This movie portrays the romantic element through a teenage main character in high school on a never-ending journey to find a love interest. Then displays the comedic element through the conflict faced by not finding the perfect boy for her and the effects of it. This movie uses realistic Mise-en-scene to portray how a wealthy teenage girl would look from Beverly Hills in the 1990s would look. Along with the set up of the school, it is also realistic with it mirroring a real classroom with desks, boards and school supplies. Medium shots are also most commonly used to show the body language of the characters and the development in their relationships.

Drama, Thriller Database

Genre: Drama, thriller
Content: Serious films with little to no effects. They typically have a main conflict that the characters are trying to overcome. Throughout these films, they document the character's development through the conflict. What makes a thriller drama is the anticipation of the outcome of the conflict during the film.
Production Techniques: Lighting would be kept low key and dark to produce a mysterious tone to the scene, leaving the viewer to wonder what will happen and to ultimately build anticipation. By having dark tones in the character's costume design, they will seem closed off giving the illusion that the viewer doesn't truly know the character. Shots mainly utilized would be close ups to clearly reveal the characters emotion which is a large factor in producing suspense. Point of view shots may also work to provide the emotional connection to the conflict in the film because it makes the viewer feel as though they are in the situation with the character. Some camera movement within the film should be shaky to build on the characters unstable state through the conflict, this is another way to highlight the emotion. Mise-en-scene and props should also be kept dark to emphasize the mystery and tension within the film. Sound effects used should be loud and abrupt while music used should build up rather than kept at a certain level. The build up will further build anticipation and leave the viewer on the edge of their seat.
Marketing: The target audience for these thriller dramas are typically young adults within the ages of 15-25. They may be marketed through commercials on various platforms like TV, YouTube ads and other social media ads. Through these commercials they should emphasize the tension with fast cut editing and a dark color scheme through different conflicts faced throughout the film to show the viewer all the conflict the film has to offer. By showing upfront what the film has to offer, the targeted audience will know what to expect.
Film #1: Argo. This film is a drama through the character development in which many of the characters face while being held in hiding from the people of Iran. And it is a thriller though the anticipation created, with the audience continuously wondering how the hostages will manage to escape from their intense hiding. Throughout the movie, members of the U.S. government must share ideas on how to have these hostages escape and with this the audience is left wondering on which idea is best on ensuring the Americans escape. This film produces suspense through the outcome of the conflict, leaving the viewer on the edge of their seat wondering if the plan ends up working. It also creates suspense with the low key lighting and empty Mise-en-scene used when the American hostages are in hiding to build anticipation on whether they will be caught.
Film #2: Kidnap. This movie is a drama through the character development the main character faces when overcoming the main conflict of finding her kidnapped son. And it has a thriller element through the suspense built up on various other conflicts throughout the film. Examples would be the main character loosing her car, getting into an accident and almost being held hostage herself. With these situations the audience builds anticipation the the main conflict of the character ultimately facing smaller challenges to retrieve her kidnapped child. This film utilizes dramatic music along with low key lighting to create an abundance of tension in the scenes.

Join me on this rough ride.

Hey! My name is Layla and I'm just so overjoyed to start this film journey.
Note the sarcasm.
Just a prank of course, but let me start this post by introducing myself. I'm 16 years old and my whole world revolves around my dogs...not kidding. I spend most of my time on the internet just like any other teenager and get yelled at my parents for it. But hey, at least I can use the excuse that I'm on my phone for Media Studies purposes. Just jokes...maybe.
My favorite things to do are hang out at the pet store, ride roller coasters and meet new people. And my favorite shows are The Office, Scrubs and Family Guy.
I've never really put much thought into the movies, shows, or even magazines I've seen, but I'm actually excited to learn why these companies do certain things to promote their media.
In this blog, I'll be updating you guys on the decisions I make for my film opening and ensuring that it comes out the best that it possible can.
So join me on this journey to figure how to produce the best media with my mediocre budget.
I'm sure it'll be full of ups and a lot of downs but all that matters is the ending result.😏
